NEW DELHI: A day after witnessing unprecedented fog-related flight disruptions, Government on Monday directed Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) to immediately operationalise IGIA’s main CAT III B runway – 28/10 – which has been closed for repairs since last September. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is issuing a slew of directives to airlines and airport operators to reduce the massive inconvenience being caused to flyers this foggy season. Also after a passenger on a delayed IndiGo flight assaulted the co-pilot, the aviation ministry has warned of strict action in such cases and termed this unruly behaviour “unacceptable.”

Shocking! Passenger assaults Indigo pilot announcing flight delay due to fog

Union aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on X (former Twitter) Monday: “Yesterday (Jan 14), Delhi witnessed unprecedented fog wherein visibility fluctuated for several hours, and at times, dropped to zero between 5 am and 9 am. The authorities, therefore, were compelled to enforce a shut-down of operations for some time even on CAT III runways (CAT III runways cannot handle Zero-Visibility operations). The decision was taken keeping passenger safety in mind, which remains the foremost priority for all in the aviation ecosystem.”

“However, to mitigate the situation in the near future, following steps have been taken: Delhi Airport has been asked to immediately expedite the operationalization of the CAT III-enabled 4th runway (in addition to the existing CAT III-enabled runway) to the satisfaction of the DGCA, in order to get approvals. The DGCA will issue an SOP for airlines on better communication and facilitation of passengers to minimise discomfort in view of flight cancellations & delays due to adverse weather,” the minister added.

“It is my earnest request to all travellers to bear with us during this difficult period. All stakeholders are trying their best to minimise passenger inconvenience. Incidences of unruly behaviour amidst this are unacceptable, and will be dealt with strongly in line with the existing legal provisions. I would like to assure everyone that all stakeholders are working round the clock to minimise the fog-related impact.”

Regarding the pilot assault case, IndiGo said in a statement: “On January 14, 2024, during the announcement of a flight delay by the first officer of flight 6E2175, a passenger assaulted the first officer. As per protocol, the passenger was declared unruly and handed over to the local law enforcement agencies for further action. The incident is being referred to the independent internal committee for appropriate action and inclusion of the passenger on the ‘no-fly list’ as laid down in regulatory guidelines.”
