MUMBAI: US coffee chain Starbucks plans to operate 1,000 stores in India by 2028 as the firm attempts to expand its footprint in one of its fastest-growing markets globally.
The Seattle-based company, which operates in India through an equal joint venture with Tata Consumer Products, currently runs 390 outlets in the country.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the firm claimed that its store strategy for the market translates into one new store opening every three days.
Led by Indian-origin CEO Laxman Narasimhan, who took over the reins of the company in March 2023, Starbucks’ aggressive India bet will entail widening its presence in tier-2 cities, launching stores in tier-3 cities and expanding its count of ‘drive-thru’, airport and 24-hour outlets in the country amid a growing consumer market for quick, on-the-go consumption. Tata Starbucks already runs stores in smaller cities like Jalandhar, Kolhapur and Siliguri. In line with its India expansion, the company also announced plans to double its workforce to 8,600. “Over the past 11 years, the India market has grown to become one of Starbucks’ fastest-growing markets in the world. With a growing middle class, we are proud to help cultivate the evolving coffee culture. With our trusted business partner Tata, and our green apron partners (employees), we are well positioned to capture the limitless opportunities as we open one store every three days in India,” Narasimhan, who was on a brief India visit, said.
