According to legends, to free Ram and Laxman from Ahiravan, Lord Hanuman took the form of Panchmukhi. The five faces included Lord Hanuman facing the east, Narasimha facing the south, Varaha facing the north, Garuda facing the west and Hayagriva facing the sky.
