Deadpool 3 Gets First Official Synopsis; Teases an MCU Shake-Up

Summary

  • Deadpool 3 will bring big changes to the MCU with the inclusion of Wolverine, potentially bridging the old Fox X-Men universe with the MCU.
  • The film’s completion of filming has fueled speculation and rumors about the plot, which is likely to continue in the coming months.
  • As the first R-rated movie in the MCU, Deadpool 3 has the potential to outperform previous Marvel movies and be a defining moment for the franchise.

Marvel’s Japanese website has released the first official – if brief – synopsis for Deadpool 3, teasing some big changes coming to the MCU at the hands Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth. Although it does not give away a great deal of information about the plot of this year’s only MCU movie release, it is another sign of things slowly ramping up towards its July 26 debut. The new synopsis, translated via The Direct, simply reads:

The irresponsible hero Deadpool will change the history of the MCU with Wolverine!?

Following the recent completion of filming, this synopsis arrives amidst online speculation and rumored plot details, which range from the likely to those that even Deadpool himself would balk at. However, this new synopsis is not going to stop that speculation growing in the coming months, no doubt further spurred on by Reynolds and Jackman on their social media accounts. One thing that the synopsis does seem to confirm is that there are big changes coming to the MCU at the hands of Deadpool.

This synopsis is a step down from the rumored longer plot, which could still turn out to be the full description of the movie and could be made official as soon as next month, when the first teaser trailer is thought to be arriving during this year’s Super Bowl. That unofficial synopsis read:

“After facing some professional setbacks while going through a midlife crisis, Wade Wilson decides to officially retire Deadpool and becomes a used car salesman. But when his friends, family, and the whole world are at stake, Deadpool decides to bring his katanas out of retirement. He recruits an unwilling and wary Wolverine to not only fight for their survival but ultimately, their legacy.”

Deadpool 3 finally wrapped its principal photography on January 24 after a number of delays caused by last year’s strike action in Hollywood. Although there has been a lot of secrecy around the movie’s filming, that hasn’t stopped dozens of set images surfacing online giving away some of the film’s secrets.

The film is expected to become a bridge across the Marvel multiverse, connecting the old Fox X-Men universe with the MCU, and possibly others too. With several of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s multiverse projects having fallen flat, Deadpool may not only change the franchise, but could end up being its unexpected savior.

As the first R-rated movie release within the MCU, the idea that Deadpool 3 could end up outperforming every Marvel movie since Avengers: Endgame (with the obvious exception of the two Spider-Man movies released since then) would have seemed incredulous just a few years ago, but how times have changed. Now, the MCU’s slate has been given a hefty push into 2025, giving Marvel Studios time to regroup, reorganize and most likely recast the role of Kang following the exit of Jonathan Majors from the franchise. That leaves the way clear for Deadpool to really do his thing this summer and clean up in a year when sequels are king.

The cast of Deadpool 3 is set to be a blend of familiar and new faces. Jennifer Garner (Elektra), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Karan Soni (Dopinder), and Morena Baccarin (Vanessa) are all confirmed to return. Newcomers to the Deadpool party include Emma Corrin, who is rumored to play the movie’s villain, and Matthew Macfadyen in an undisclosed role. Naturally, this does not account for the many cameo appearances that could happen, with everyone from Patrick Stewart to Tom Hiddleton having been thrown into the rumor hat at some point.

Fans of Deadpool and Wolverine who cannot wait for the movie’s July 26 release can pacify themselves with the previous adventures of Reynolds and Jackman’s characters on Disney+.
