Only two days remain until the announcement of the 2024 Academy Awards nominations drop on Tuesday morning, but Tom Cruise is celebrating another coveted honor today. Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning has been awarded the Golden Tomato for the Best-Reviewed Action & Adventure Movie of 2023. And Cruise took to social media to thank Rotten Tomatoes, the critics and fans for the recognition. Cruise said via Rotten Tomatoes’ official X, formerly Twitter, account:

“I want to thank you Rotten Tomatoes, all the critics, and all the fans, because we make these movies for each and every one of you. I speak on behalf of McQ [director Christopher McQuarrie], our entire cast and crew, that we are thrilled, and truly honored to be not only one of the best-reviewed films of the year, but the best-reviewed action movie of 2023. Thank you.”

Dead Reckoning beat out John Wick: Chapter 4 to take home the Golden Tomato for the Best-Reviewed Action & Adventure Movie of 2023. The Mission: Impossible sequel boasts 96% on the Tomatometer against 429 reviews, while the fourth installment in the Baba Yaga’s film series registers 94% against 373 reviews.

Mission: Impossible — Awards Season

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning also came extremely close to winning the Golden Tomato for Best Movie of 2023. While the honor ultimately fell to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Dead Reckoning ranked No. 2, having beaten out titles like Barbie, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Killers of the Flower Moon for the silver medal.

Tom Cruise and the rest of the Dead Reckoning creative company also finished No. 2 behind Oppenheimer for the Best Wide Release Movie of 2023. And while Awards Season 2024 is just getting underway, the Golden Tomato certainly helps cushion the blow felt by Dead Reckoning’s lone Golden Globe nomination (Cinematic and Box Office Achievement), which, of course, went to Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.

While fans and critics enjoyed the action film, Dead Reckoning struggled at the box office. Dead Reckoning’s $54.7-million opening weekend (domestically) ranks No. 4 behind franchise leader Mission-Impossible: Fallout’s $61.2 million, Mission: Impossible II ($57.9 million) and Rogue Nation’s $55.5-million opening.
