In an exclusive interview with MovieWeb, Five Nights at Freddy’s star Josh Hutcherson offered a further update on the development of a possible (read: likely) sequel. During the chat, Hutcherson said that, while there hasn’t yet been an official announcement regarding Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, the team behind the first movie is currently trying to work out where to go next. Not an easy task considering the rich lore.

“They haven’t made an official announcement or anything, but they’ve got a lot to figure out as far as where they want to take it because the games’ lore is so deep. There are so many iterations of the game and stuff that I think they really kind of want to nail down and make a great movie and do it justice again. But I’m super proud of [the first] movie. I think it’s really fun. I think that it’s a joy to watch. It’s a great intro-horror film in many ways. The fans of the game also were happy with it, so it’s great to be a part of it.”

Released back in October last year, Five Nights at Freddy’s adapts the hugely popular horror game for the big screen, and follows Hutcherson’s character, a troubled security guard, as he starts a job at an abandoned pizzeria and family entertainment center. Soon, he discovers the animatronic mascots are a little more animated than he expected…

While the first movie was far from a hit with critics, Five Nights at Freddy’s was a huge success with audiences, grossing $294 million worldwide and becoming Blumhouse’s highest-grossing movie ever.

Following such success, a sequel is surely now a cinematic inevitability, with Hutcherson recently revealing that the studio is now “in the process” of “nailing down the story,” and that they “want to get going as soon as possible.”

While Hutcherson is the star of one of the most successful movies of the year, he hasn’t seen many other big titles in 2023. And it’s all because of Fortnite. Continuing, the actor revealed that he still has not seen the likes of Oppenheimer or Killers of the Flower Moon, but he did love Fallen Leaves, the romantic comedy-drama from filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki.

“I’m really behind on so many movies. I need to watch so many. I just finally watched Fallen Leaves, which I thought was really good. I haven’t seen Oppenheimer. I haven’t seen Killers of the Flower Moon. I’m so far behind. I got a lot of catching up to do… also started playing Fortnite recently, and that’s just not helpful in my career because I should be watching movies instead.”

While we await further news regarding Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, Josh Hutcherson can currently be seen starring alongside action icon Jason Statham in The Beekeeper. Directed by David Ayer and written by Kurt Wimmer, The Beekeeper finds The Stath starring as a mysterious man who is launched into a one-man mission for revenge after his friend is scammed.
