Latest Leak Points to Lengthy Wait For Resident Evil 9, as well as Potentially Four Other Franchise Games

Resident Evil is undoubtedly one of the most iconic gaming franchises to date. With its debut in 1996 on the PlayStation, Capcom’s horror survival series has experienced its ups and downs but still holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers.

So, when a prominent insider leaks that as many as five new games in the franchise could be in development simultaneously, it’s bound to get fans and critics speculating. The success of the recent installments, including the remakes, has set the bar high for potential sequels so it’s no surprise that Capcom is focusing heavily on its flagship series.

Claims Suggest Five New Resident Evil Games are in Simultaneous Development

The leak comes from Dusk Golem (a.k.a. AestheticGamer), well-known for their insider information on the Resident Evil series. They posted this information in the Discord channel of another prominent leaker The Snitch, and screenshots of the message were promptly shared on the r/GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit. Dusk Golem’s message reads,

Yup, I know of 5 RE games in dev right now including RE9.

They went on to say that they recently got a “big update” on a title that has them “really excited”. However, since that title is not slated for release until late 2026 or early 2027, Dusk Golem has decided to “just hold my tongue for now”.

Dusk Golem’s specific mention of Resident Evil 9 is welcome but an expected confirmation for fans. Resident Evil Village witnessed widespread approval from critics and fans, so a sequel was always expected.

However, some rumors suggest that the ninth installment could also be the final mainline numbered entry into the series. The game has been claimed to be in development since 2018 with an expected release in 2025. Not only does it have one of the longest development cycles of a Resident Evil game, but it is also going to have the largest budget of any game in the franchise.

Aside from the obvious RE9, it’s safe to assume new remakes are also in the works. The success of the Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 remakes is a strong indicator that Capcom may be looking to bring back some of the classics. Resident Evil producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi even stated in December,

For us, as people who love past titles, we are very happy that people in this era can play the games, so we would like to continue to do so.

Capcom has also been sending out surveys to gamers asking which game they would like to see remade in the current generation.

As far as remakes go, there are a few on the list to choose from. Resident Evil 1 would be the most likely choice, but there is also the fan-favorite Resident Evil – Code: Veronica. With five games in production, and an upcoming DLC series for the RE 4 remake, it could very well be the case that multiple remakes are on the roster.
