Lucy Liu Shares Honest but Disappointing View on Charlie’s Angels Sequel Chances

Summary

  • Lucy Liu doesn’t believe there’s a place for a legacy sequel to Charlie’s Angels due to changing times and attitudes.
  • McG, the director of the original Charlie’s Angels films, is open to the possibility of a third movie and would discuss it with the original cast.
  • Drew Barrymore has expressed her willingness to return for another Charlie’s Angels film “in a heartbeat” and maintains a close friendship with her former co-stars.

The question of whether the cast of 2000’s Charlie’s Angels could have one more adventure in them has been getting a lot of discussion recently. While Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and director McG have all expressed some interest in collaborating again – no matter how unlikely that outcome may actually be – it seems that Lucy Liu has a very different view on the chances of ever bringing Charlie’s Angels back to the big screen.

While speaking with Variety, Liu was asked whether she believed there was a chance that Charlie’s Angels 3 could happen, and she was quick to suggest that there probably isn’t a place for a legacy sequel in the world now. She said:

“I honestly don’t know how that’s going to be feasible. There have been so many iterations, even after the fact… In some ways, it’s such a strange thing to think about it, because times have changed so much since then. I mean, at that time, when we were doing publicity, they had never before had three women on a magazine cover. They didn’t even know how to do it. So, it was just a strange thing for women to collaborate and be seen as colleagues and friends.”

While chatting with Entertainment Weekly last August about his upcoming Netflix comedy Family Switch, Charlie’s Angels director McG revealed that he’s open to returning for a third Charlie’s Angels film.

McG directed the 2000 adaption starring Drew Barrymore as Dylan Sanders, Lucy Liu as Alex Munday, and Cameron Diaz as Natalie Cook. He later returned for the 2003 sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. Still, despite the lengthy time gap since The Babysitter director’s last Charlie’s Angels film, McG isn’t dismissing the possibility of a third movie just yet. He said at the time:

“It would take a long discussion with those three wonderful performers who I adore. I was very happy to see Elizabeth Banks take the helm and do what she did, which was fun. There always seems to be chatter about that. I’m very happy to discuss it with Drew and Cameron and Lucy, but at the same time, I’m very happy to pass the torch.”

As for the likelihood of returning for a third film, McG continued:

“Who knows? Maybe we’ve got one left in us that tells a very compelling story if the opportunity presents itself. I love the three of them so much. They put me on the map. They looked out for me when I was a first-time filmmaker. I was very nearly fired off that film on many, many occasions, and Drew stood up for me and I’m forever indebted to her. And obviously, those are three performers where God broke the mold. They don’t make ’em like that. I mean, those are three special ones.”

Previously, on her talk show, The Drew Barrymore Show, the eponymous host opened up about returning for another Charlie’s Angels film, noting that she would do it “in a heartbeat.” Barrymore said:

I would be surprised if any one of us ever decreed that we wouldn’t [do a third movie]. I would. I would do it in a heartbeat. The answer is an emphatic yes. I will always say yes.

Back in 2020, the Ever After star provided fans with a Charlie’s Angels reunion for the premiere of her show, with her former costars appearing on the talk show as Barrymore’s first guests.

While speaking about her relationship with her former costars, Barrymore said, “The thing that I love about our friendship is that we have been there in all the big and important moments, we’ve also been there in the small moments and the casual moments. The reason we are such good friends is because it’s real and we go through real stuff with each other.”

Charlie’s Angels, and its sequel Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, are available to stream on Paramount+.
