Barbie will have to go and party somewhere else because Greta Gerwig’s bright-pink blockbuster was bested by Poor Things. Yes, director Yorgos Lanthimos’ Frankenstein-esque tale won the 2024 Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Last year, at the 2023 ceremony, its was another dark comedic tale that took home the highly coveted hardware: The Banshees of Inisherin.

When Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was originally announced, the idea that it would go on to become the highest-grossing movie of 2023 was the furthest thing from anyone’s mind. The film boasted one of the biggest casts of the year, including its Oscar-nominated leads in Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, but was something of an enigma for most of its production.
Even the trailers left many people wondering exactly what the movie’s angle was, but its director had a clear vision for a cinematic experience that subverted many expectations. The story of Barbie (Margot Robbie) discovering that her life was being controlled by her “owner” in the real world, and setting off on a journey that not only tore up the rules in Barbieland, took a long look at the world in which we live.
While there may have been some who doubted the movie’s chances in what appeared to be a summer of action heroes and comic book adventures, Robbie had no issues when originally pitching the film as a potential success. But while 2023 was the year of Barbie, 2024 begins with several films wiping the floor with the billion-dollar blockbuster at the Golden Globes.
