Hayden Panettiere is looking back at her past and revealing that, despite being a hit TV series on ABC at the time, working on Nashville was a traumatizing experience because it felt like art imitating life.

During an interview with The Messenger, via Deadline, the actress revealed that starring in Nashville for six years was “very traumatizing” because the character she played, Juliette Barnes, very much mirrored her life, particularly her battles with substance abuse, alcoholism, and postpartum depression.

“Straight from the beginning, it was like, I’m dating a football player, [and then] Juliette dates a football player. And then they turned her into an alcoholic. Then they turned to her leaving her daughter and go to this crazy [place] in Europe, and it was very obvious…”

Hayden Panetierre’s role in Nashville mirrored her life in many ways

In Nashville, Juliette Barnes was a bubblegum country pop singer and former teen star sensation who made it her mission to replace Rayna James (Connie Britton) as the top superstar in country music. The character dealt with her fair share of issues across the run of the series and Panettiere believes the writers were just copying her real life instead of doing proper research.

“They weren’t doing their homework. They weren’t creating new storylines. They were just looking at my life and going, ‘Oh, let’s just take what she’s going through and put our little spin on it.’ And then, ta-da! It’s done and done.”

Panettiere has been very vocal about the personal issues she has experienced during her career, particularly in recent years. She started in the industry at a very young age, appearing in her first commercial at 11 months old. The actress began performing full-time in 1994 at the age of four and began a career in film and TV that included roles in A Bugs Life, Remember The Titans, Ally McBeal, Heroes, and Scream 4.
