We as an audience love a happy ending. True, some of us prefer more tragic endings that leave us feeling devastated. But the majority of the audience feels a sense of content when it comes to happy endings. It’s a good feeling to see our favorite characters overcome their problems and achieve the ending they deserve. That’s the type of ending that the Netflix action-comedy-drama series The Brothers Sun has given us. Which is surprising, especially since the main cast are all still alive. It would have made sense if at least one of them died at the hands of Big Sun.
But a lot happened during the season finale in order to achieve that happy ending. From twists and turns to betrayals, big reveals, and even bigger bloodshed, it’s all going down. The Brothers Sun had a wonderful cast that brought their characters to life in ways we never thought possible. This is not just your typical gangster show. Each main character gained something from their suffering, and Big Bad Sun himself finally got his downfall.

In the season finale, surprisingly enough, the Sun family have their own somewhat happy endings. Charles, no longer under his father, Big Sun’s, control, opens up a bakery. The ex-criminal gangster son finally fulfills his dreams and can not only open up a bakery but watch baking shows without being harassed for it. He even perfects his recipe for churros and leaves a box for his brother. He doesn’t stay at the bakery for long, though. He flies back to Taiwan with his mother, Mama Sun, so he can reconnect with her and support her. He spent the majority of his life as Big Sun’s puppet and not his son, nor Mama Sun’s son. Hopefully, the two of them can rebuild what was lost.
Why does Mama Sun need support from Charles? Why are they flying to Taiwan? The reason is because, for Mama Sun’s ending, she decides to go back home and become the Dragon Head for the remaining Triad gangs. She is on a mission to make the triads more organized and intelligent; more in her image instead of Big Sun’s. While it makes sense that she would want to do this, she might also be going back to rekindle with her family. After all, Big Sun betrayed the one thing she asked of him: to let her know if her family in Taiwan needed her help. He failed to keep that promise and never told Mama Sun about her sister’s cancer, leading to her death.
As for Bruce, his character development is just as big (and important) as Charles and Mama Sun. It’s thanks to his older brother that Bruce is tougher than he was since the first episode. So much so that, in the last episode, he has every intention of killing Big Sun to protect his family from any more suffering. He does end up shooting his father and wounding him to the point of hospitalization. Not only that, but this leads to Big Sun finally getting arrested for his crimes. Now that Bruce and his family are free of his father’s torment, the confidence that he has gained for himself never waves. He continues to act on-stage with his improv group.

10 Thrilling Shows Like The Brothers Sun to Watch Next
The following shows are as action-packed, well-crafted and humorous as The Brothers Sun. We recommend watching them next.
Grace’s Reveal for Revenge
Madison Hu did such a terrific job at being an unassuming love interest. Grace seemed like a normal schoolgirl with a massive crush on Bruce. Only to find out that she was just getting closer to the younger Sun brother to get revenge on the gangsters. That’s right, she was the bad guy all along. This reveal happened during the big shootout between the police, the Boxer gang (which she is a member of), and the other triads. But she had a good reason for luring Bruce into a false sense of security. Said gangsters had not only killed her immigrant friends’ families but murdered her father as well. She wants to take down these gangsters, starting with the Sun family, since they are the leaders of the Triads.
It is entirely possible that the connection between the two was genuine and that Grace wasn’t entirely untruthful in her affection towards Bruce. It was the best way for her to get an inside connection with the Sun family. Unfortunately, we’ll never get to see her relationship with Bruce blossom naturally. During the shootout, she gets killed by June, a tattoo artist who also grew close to the Sun family as revenge for her twin sister’s death, who was killed by the Boxers in the very first episode.

What Happened to Big Sun?
Big Sun sends Charles to kill Bruce in front of Mama Sun after Bruce tells Grace about where the Ghost meeting is set to take place. Big Sun sees this as a betrayal against the family, but when Charles comes back empty-handed, Big Sun sends out an assassin to finish the job. However, Mama Sun ends up strangling the assassin with a phone cord and killing him. Seeing how this pain and suffering won’t end, Bruce faces off against his father. Big Sun tries to bait him into ruling the gangs in Taiwan together, but Bruce shoots him and severely injures him. Big Sun is given the option to call for help and is sent to the hospital. As he is hospitalized, Mama Sun poses as a nurse to tamper with his hospital chart, so he can get daily doses of insulin.
You may think that this is the end. The Sun family is finally free to live their lives as they want, and Big Sun is out of the picture for good. In the post-credits scene of the finale, we see that Big Sun’s second-in-command, Yuan, is planning what comes next. There is a trial that is set for Frank Ma to testify against Big Sun, but Yuan is set to stop this. This could mean that, if there is a second season, Big Sun might just live and exact his revenge against his family, starting with the trial. Or it might be that Big Sun dies, and the next big bad will be Yuan. It’s a suspenseful feeling, knowing that the Sun family (minus Big Sun) get their happy endings, but only because it might be temporary.
