The Eternal Cities Lore, Explained

The Lands Between found in FromSoftware’s Elden Ring is vast and has many areas to discover and explore by the player. These areas include new bosses, demigods, and items for the player to unlock, making it a great gameplay to experience thoroughly.

However, whoever plays the game is not only limited to the surface of the map, as there is a whole other layout available to explore under The Lands Between, called the Eternal Cities. Origins about these hidden cities remain unknown for the most part, but fans of the game have pieced together information through dialogues and readily available item descriptions.

The Significance Of Eternal Cities To The Main Storyline Of Elden Ring

There are two great rivers which flow underground and are called the Siofra and the Ainsel river. Regions of the Eternal Cities are mainly based upon the banks of these rivers. There are also various routes that the players can choose to access the underground world of Elden Ring.

The two major cities that make up the Eternal Cities are called Nokron and Nokstella, also called the twin cities by War Counselor Iji. The cities are populated by the people of Nox, and hold many treasures within that need to be accessed to unlock the Age of Stars ending.

Through the item descriptions, players have been able to figure out that Nox was a community that used to live on the surface above on The Lands Between. However, they were banished to live underground under a false sky after they happened to anger The Greater Will, in an event that remains majorly undisclosed.

It is for the Ranni’s quest line that the player heads to the Eternal City of Nokron, to retrieve the treasure of the Finger Slayer Blade hidden in the city. It is through this particular quest that the player can progress her quest line and unlock the Age of Stars ending at the last.

How To Access The Eternal Cities Of Elden Ring

As mentioned before, there are various routes one can take in Elden Ring to get to the underground layout of The Lands Between. These include going through Renna’s Rise located in Northern Liurnia, taking the Deep Siofra Well in Dragonbarrow in Caelid, or finally taking the Siofra River Well hidden in Mistwood.

Nonetheless, to access the city of Nokron to progress Ranni’s quest line, the player does not have a choice but to defeat Starscourge Radahn. After doing so, the way to the city of Nokron opens up on the surface after a star falls on the ground in Limgrave, opening up a path.

The Eternal Cities remain one of the best areas to be included in the game. While the city might not be necessarily accessed to finish the game, we recommend the players make a trip down there at least once in their playthrough of the game.

Elden Ring is available to purchase on Steam.
