Tom Holland Swaps Spider-Man For Shakespeare After “Big Announcement” Disappoints Marvel Fans

Summary

  • Tom Holland’s “big announcement” disappointed Marvel fans hoping for news about Spider-Man 4.
  • Instead, Holland revealed that he will be returning to the stage in a revival of Romeo and Juliet.
  • Despite the unexpected news, fans were still excited and even suggested Zendaya for the role of Juliet.

Tom Holland set the internet into a frenzy on Monday by teasing an imminent “big announcement.” Naturally, Marvel fans wasted no time in convincing themselves that this would be centered on his potential return as Peter Parker in a fourth Spider-Man movie, but it seems that section of Holland’s fandom have been left disappointed once again as the announcement couldn’t have been further from news about the webbed wonder.

Rather than announcing Spider-Man 4, Holland announced that he will be swapping the big screen for treading the boards as he returns to the stage for a revival of The Jamie Lloyd Company’s interpretation of Romeo and Juliet. Although it may not be the news that many were hoping for, the actor’s return to theater work is something of a homecoming for him, thanks to his early stage work in Billy Elliott: The Musical.

While making the announcement, the company shared its description of the production, which reads:

Violent delights have violent ends. Tom Holland is Romeo in Jamie Lloyd’s pulsating new vision of Shakespeare’s immortal tale of wordsmiths, rhymers, lovers and fighters. May 2024 | Duke of York’s Theatre

Holland shared a post on his Instagram account, and while it may not have been the expected information about Spider-Man’s future, his fans were excited about the news all the same – and even had their own casting suggestion that Zendaya should be cast in the role of Juliet. We won’t hold our breath for that one.

Marvel Studios is very secretive about the future of the MCU, and when it comes to Spider-Man’s future, it has been impossible for anyone to get a handle on when Tom Holland’s web-slinging will be back in action. There have been many rumors about how and when his next appearance could be, but with Holland now set to return to theaters for Romeo and Juliet, it seems that he will not be getting back into his Spider-Man role in the near future.

Recent reports have suggested that there is once again an unrest between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures over the direction of the next movie to feature Peter Parker, with the former wanting to keep the character grounded and the latter expecting another sprawling multiverse adventure to rival Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, fans have already poured cold water on Sony’s idea, fearing that anything attempting to replicate the nostalgia-filled movie will end up tarnishing everything that made it special.

Holland himself has swayed around the subject in previous interviews, noting that he doesn’t really want to play the character again unless there is a story that does him justice. Speaking in 2023, Holland said:

“I feel very protective over Spider-Man. I feel very, very lucky that we were able to work on a franchise that got better with each movie, that got more successful with each movie, which I think is really rare, and I want to protect his legacy. So, I won’t make another one for the sake of making another one. It will have to be worth the while of the character.”

While the wait for news on Spider-Man continues, you can relive his best moments so far across various streaming platforms, including Disney+, Netflix and Prime Video.
