We can expect some major updates for both the Knuckles Paramount+ spinoff series and the big screen sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 3, according to star Tika Sumpter. In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Sumpter, who has played Maddie Wachowski alongside James Marsden’s Tom Wachowski throughout the franchise, joked that she would be fired if she revealed too much, but did allow herself to state that details would be unveiled “very soon.”

“I think the info is coming very soon. But you are going to be extremely happy. I think there’s a lot coming, so just you wait. That’s all I got for you. They’ll fire me! [Laughs]”

The Knuckles spinoff will reportedly take place between the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, with an official logline revealing that the series will follow Knuckles as he “agrees to train Wade as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior.”

The series will see Idris Elba reprise the role of Knuckles alongside Adam Pally as Wade Whipple and Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski. The series has amassed a stellar cast alongside them, including Cary Elwes (Saw, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning) as “Pistol” Pete Whipple, as well as Edi Patterson (The Righteous Gemstones), Julian Barratt (Mindhorn, The Mighty Boosh), Kid Cudi aka Scott Mescudi (Don’t Look Up), Ellie Taylor (Ted Lasso), Rory McCann (Game of Thrones), Stockard Channing (Grease), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future), Paul Scheer (The League), and Rob Huebel (The Other Guys).

Welcome to the next level.

While details of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 remain largely under wraps (we await “very soon” with bated breath), we do know that it will involve the big screen debut of Shadow the Hedgehog. Teased during the final moments of 2022’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2, during which Shadow makes a non-speaking cameo appearance in a mid-credits scene, the antihero hedgehog expected to play a big role in the threequel.

The writers behind Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Pat Casey and Josh Miller, have all but confirmed that Shadow will play a major role in the upcoming sequel, revealing which video games they would most like to take inspiration from.

“The fact that Shadow is clearly going to be in the franchise moving forward, I don’t think it’s revealing anything to say we’d love to incorporate elements from Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog, his solo spinoff game.”

Directed once again by Jeff Fowler and written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 stars Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic alongside James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Lee Majdoub, and Idris Elba.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is scheduled to be theatrically released by Paramount Pictures in the United States on December 20, 2024.
