Google Pixel phones running Android 13 QPR1 are getting the December security patch.

Android 13 sees Google continue with the concept of “quarterly platform releases,” and QPR1 is now rolling out to Pixel phones with the December security patch and feature drop.

Compared to last year (with version 12.1 for Android 12L), QPR1 is still just “Android 13” and coincides with the December feature drop.

QPR1 contains some user-facing changes, starting with the ability to remove the media player from the lock screen. “Show media on lock screen” can be toggled off from the Settings app > Sound & Vibration > Media. (The double-line clock still gets minimized when music is playing.) Speaking of the media player, Android 13 QPR1 tweaks it so that the scrubber is now a pill instead of a circle that some thought looked like sperm.

In Quick Settings, Google has animated various tiles upon tapping, while some icons have been refreshed. This touch of whimsy includes Bluetooth, auto-rotate, flashlight, airplane mode, do not disturb, hotspot, dark theme, and night light.

The unified Pixel Launcher search, which was pulled at the last second from the stable launch in August, is back. Live during the betas, it starts with the search field at the bottom of your home screen matching the bar at the top of the app drawer. Entering a query there will bring up both web and phone content, including applications, app shortcuts, contacts, Play Store results, and screenshots.

In Settings, Android 13 QPR1 renames Display’s “Increase touch sensitivity” toggle to “Screen protector mode,” while there are small visual tweaks to the “Screen saver” preferences and the “Press & hold power button” menu. The combined security and privacy page is also now live.

The Battery usage graph can now show data since your last full charge (up to 7 days).

After updating to the final consumer release of Android 13 QPR1 with the stable OTA, Pixel owners can opt out of the Android Beta Program without a data wipe. Again, wait for the final OTA from QPR1 Beta 3.1 to the stable version before doing this on google.com/android/beta

There are 44 security issues resolved in the Android 13 December patch dated 2022-12-01 and 36 for 2022-12-05.

The dedicated bulletin for Google devices lists 151 security fixes with a separate O2 UK build for the Pixel 6a, 7, and 7 Pro. There’s also a separate Pixel 4a build for Canada.

Today’s update is older than QPR1 Beta 3.1, and cannot be sideloaded today:

Android 13 QPR1 rolling out to Beta 3.1 users | opt out before next week to avoid data wipe

As of this afternoon, the stable Android 13 QPR1 release is rolling out to users enrolled in the Beta Program, and you can now opt out of the program without a data wipe occurring.

Initially, Beta 3.1 (from November 7) users could not sideload Android 13 QPR1 with the December security patch as last month’s build was technically newer than this morning’s stable release. Google this afternoon released an OTA for Pixel phones on the Android Beta Program. It comes in at just 2.94MB on the Pixel 7 Pro.

To get this OTA, be sure your device is enrolled in the Beta Program. If you just manually sideloaded without enrolling, your phone will not get the OTA. (We were in this boat, but the proper update appeared seconds after we signed up.)

After downloading and installing the update, your Pixel will be on a build that starts with TQ1A. At this point, Google says “you can opt-out of the beta program without a data wipe.”

Important: If you prefer to leave the beta program and return to the public stable track of Android 13, you have a window of opportunity to unenroll without wiping your device. Please update and install the official Android 13 December update released today (TQ1A) and then opt out of the program before installing the first Android 13 QPR2 beta update releasing next week. This will ensure your device will not get wiped during opt-out.

This is important as you have a window before the Android 13 QPR2 Beta starts up “the week of December 12th.” Doing nothing keeps your device enrolled and you’ll get QPR2 Beta 1. At that point, you will have to wait “until the next window of opportunity becomes available in March with the official release of the March Feature Drop,” which is in line with what Google telegraphed in August.

With the Android 13 QPR1 update, the Pixel 7 receives more than 70 fixes.

As expected, Android 13 QPR1 introduces a slew of fixes for both the Pixel 7 series and older supported Google phones.

The first Pixel 7 and 7 Pro update last month only brought a trio of fixes. December’s, which coincides with Android 13 QPR1, brings over 70 across all categories.
