James Gunn Believes DC Is Better Than Marvel Because Of Its Game Of Thrones Style Feature That Can’t Be Replaced

With the collapse of the old regime we all knew as the DCEU as soon as James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the reins of DC Studios, there was quite a lot of commotion, with all eyes fixed on the CEOs’ next moves. To answer this, the filmmaker sat down and opened up about how the world of DC Comics was kind of like the world of Westeros, which was more fantastical and full of possibilities, much more than what the MCU could offer.

James Gunn Reveals How The DCU Being More Fantastical Like Game Of Thrones Differentiates It From The MCU

Being one of the few filmmakers who have left a lasting impression on both the MCU and the DCEU with straight hits, James Gunn may be considered an encyclopedia on the topic of comic book films along with being a trailblazer in the industry. And when he revealed how the DCU had one major feature that would set it apart from its contemporary cinematic franchise of the MCU, it got people both wondering and excited, maybe both at the same time.

In a past interview with Michael Rosenbaum on his podcast Inside of You, the Guardians of the Galaxy director revealed that along with the MCU having little to no secret identities amongst the majority of their main roster, they also are very grounded in reality. This may be one of their key success factors, but it’s also very limiting, which is evident from the real-world locations and landmarks where they operate.

In the world of DC Comics, almost every major superhero has some alter-ego that is seldom revealed, and their world too is a work of fiction. Thus, just like how Game of Thrones has Westeros as their fantastical element along with everything else, the DCU is also quite similar. He said:

“One of the things that I love about DC, that excites me about DC, is that in a way it’s another alternate history, It is Gotham City and Metropolis and Star City and Bludhaven, and all these different places in this other reality, and it makes it a little bit like Westeros in some ways.”

Thus, just like GOT, the possibility to perpetually expand and elaborate on every single detail, be it major or minor, is what sets the DCU apart from its counterpart, making it better in some ways than them as well.

What Does James Gunn Have In Store For Us In The Future?

As things stand at the moment, 2024 will be the year the filmmaker’s vision of the DCU with Peter Safran starts to take shape with the release of their first project in the franchise, an animated series titled Creature Commandos, which is all set to release.

Related to the world of the DCU, Gunn also promised to develop a detailed world map of the fantasy world of DC Comics into the films for smooth transitions and connected cohesiveness between major plot points. As for what the films would look like, he has already revealed the first phase of his plan, which is the first ten years of the franchise titled ‘Gods and Monsters’.
